NEW DELHI: One of the largest importers of wheat from Russia and Ukraine, Egypt has added India as a wheat supplier, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday.

The global markets have seen a huge downfall in the availability of wheat due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, two major producers and suppliers of the food grain.

“Indian farmers are feeding the world. Egypt approves India as a wheat supplier. Modi Government steps in as the world looks for reliable alternate sources for steady food supply,” Goyal said in a tweet.

“Our farmers have ensured our granaries overflow & we are ready to serve the world,” he added.

Egypt relies heavily on the nations around the Black Sea due to cost effectiveness and geographical proximity. In 2021, Russia and Ukraine together constituted 80 per cent of Egypt’s total wheat imports.

Following escalation in the Russia-Ukraine war, the dessert nation has faced several issues including sanctions imposed by the United States and the West to process the imports from Russia with payments and shipments emerging as the major hindrances through food is excluded from sanctions.

Besides neighbours Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, India also exports wheat to South Korea, Oman, and Qatar.

Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat are the major producers of wheat in India.
