NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday carried out searches at 11 locations in Assam in connection with Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) or the Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent case.
Sharing details, an NIA spokesperson shared that searches were carried out at 11 locations in Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts of Assam on the premises of the accused named in the case.
The case pertains to the disruption of an active module of ABT, affiliated with Al Qaeda in the Indian Sub-Continent, operating in Barpeta district of Assam. The module was allegedly being led by Saiful Islam aka Haroon Rashid aka Mohammad Suman, a resident of Bangladesh.
The official said that Islam had entered India illegally and was working as an Arabic Teacher at Dhakaliapara Masjid.
“He was actively motivating impressionable youth to join Jihadi outfits and work in “Ansars” (sleeper cells) for carrying out subversive activities and for the establishment of a base for AQIS in eastern India,” the official said.
A case was registered on March 4 this year and NIA took over the case on March 22.
Incriminating documents and other materials have reportedly been seized during searches conducted today at the premises of the accused, the official shared.
