SRINAGAR: A government school teacher has been suspended and attached to an administrative office following the allegation of corporal punishment to a girl student in Rajouri district.

Nisar Ahmed, the teacher, posted at Government Middle School Khadurian in Draman panchayat of Kotranka sub division, was attached to the office of Additional Deputy Commissioner after parents of some girl students, at a press conference, alleged that he had resorted to using objectionable language against the students.

It is unacceptable to us, they said.

Taking note of these allegations, the Rajouri district administration has ordered an enquiry against the teacher by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kotranka. The administration said that corporal punishment and beating of children in any school was strictly prohibited.

Corporal punishment, a form of punishment in which physical force is used with an intention to cause some degree of pain or discomfort, is the most widespread form of violence against children, activists say. It is a violation of children’s rights to respect for human dignity and physical integrity, they say.

Officials at the office of Jammu and Kashmir Secretary (Education) told The New Indian that they cautioned the management of government-run as well as private schools against resorting to corporal punishment.

“Any institution found committing violation of the provisions will be prosecuted under the Juvenile Justice Act and other relevant provisions of law,” officials said, adding that complaints have been received that children are not treated properly and undue mental harassment is caused to them in case of any dispute with parents.

“In today’s case, the parents of the girl student have registered protest against the corporal punishment,” a senior official of the School Education Department told The New Indian.

“Once the inquiry is completed and the teacher is found committing violation of the provisions, he will be prosecuted under the Juvenile Justice Act and other relevant provisions of the law,” the official said.
