SHIMLA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday gifted to his Nepal counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba a traditional ‘Pahari School’ miniature painting from Himachal Pradesh, depicting the season of monsoon and the eternal lovers Radha and Krishna.

Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Vipin Parmar told The New Indian that it was not the first time that PM Modi had presented a souvenir from the hill state to a foreign dignitary. “Earlier too, PM Modi had presented Chamba Roomal and Himachali traditional caps to dignitaries. We feel proud that the state of Himachal Pradesh is being honoured by the Prime Minister of India,” he added.

Also known as a Kangra miniature painting, this art form from the 17th century period is part of the hill state’s living history. The painting is said to be a part of the famous Barahmasa Series, and depicts Radha and Krishna under a canopy of thundering monsoon clouds, engaged in a conversation while holding hands.

The intricately rendered painting is set in a beautiful landscape of lush flora and hutments, depicting the tranquil beauty of Himachal Pradesh, particularly from the 17th century to the 19th century.

This was a period of intense creativity when the ‘Pahari School of Miniature Painting’, with sub-schools like Kangra, Guler and Bhasoli, was established under royal patronage and reached its stylistic zenith.

Deuba was on a three-day visit to India and met several dignitaries, including PM Modi.

Congress leaders, however, are tight lipped and in a fix over the gesture — this being the election year in Himachal — as it would be politically incorrect for them to act against this move. They are reportedly dejected over the hype being created by the BJP leaders to cash in on this move of the PM in Himachal.
