BENGALURU: On an action-packed Day 1 of the second Test at Bengaluru, India reduced Sri Lanka to 86-6 at stumps after scoring 252 in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah was the wrecker-in-chief as he snapped up three wickets.
Earlier in the day, India opted to bat after winning the toss. However opener Mayank Agarwal was run out in the second over. Captain Rohit Sharma played a couple of sizzling shots but fell for 15. Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli added 47 runs for the third wicket but they both fell in quick succession.
Rishabh Pant went on the rampage and smashed 39 off 26 balls, which included seven fours, but he was dismissed by the left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya as he tried to cut the ball which wasn’t short enough.
Embuldeniya, who was badly mangled by Pant and Ravindra Jadeja, bowled creditably, troubled Indian batsmen and picked up three crucial scalps. He was ably supported by Jayawickrama.
Apart from Shreyas Iyer, who scored scintillating 92, no other Indian batter showed the application to convert good starts into big scores as the hosts were skittled out for 252 in their first innings.
However, visitors could not capitalize on the good show put up by their bowlers. Sri Lanka’s top order was blown away by Bumrah’s supersonic spell. Angelo Mathews, who scored 43, was the only batsmen who exhibited some spunk.
The visitors are still trailing by 166 runs and their lower middle-order will have to bat superbly next morning to get closer to India’s first innings total.
India won the 1st Test at Mohali by an innings and 222 runs to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
