Army Officer Killed In Chopper Crash in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: An officer of the Indian Army lost his life in a helicopter crash Gurez area of Bandipora district in North Kashmir on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The Cheetah helicopter of the Army was on a routine mission to evacuate an ailing soldier from a forward post, officials said.

“The helicopter lost communication contact with the forward post at Gujran in Baraub area of Gurez. A search operation on foot was immediately launched by the Indian Army alongside search and rescue helicopters which were pressed into service. The wreckage of the crashed helicopter was found in snowbound Gujran Nallah area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora,” reads an official release.

The pilot and co-pilot of the helicopter sustained grievous injuries in the crash and were immediately evacuated to Command Hospital, Udhampur.

Co-pilot Major Sankalp Yadav, 29, succumbed to his injuries at the 92, Base Hospital in Srinagar city.

The condition of the injured pilot was critical, but stable, and was admitted to the ICU ward of the hospital, officials said.

Major Yadav was a native of Jaipur, Rajasthan, and was commissioned in 2015. He is survived by his father, officials said.
