NEW DELHI: Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and Congress General secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday launched the manifesto favouring the youth of Uttar Pradesh with a promise of employment to 20 lakh youth and setting up of a world level cricket academy.

While launching a booklet, titled ‘Bharti Vidhan’, for Uttar Pradesh ahead of assembly polls, Rahul Gandhi criticised the ruling BJP for its “failed vision and promises made in 2014” and said that their rule has “proved (to be) a disaster for the country”.

Addressing a press conference here at the party headquarters, Rahul Gandhi said, “The elections are upon us in Uttar Pradesh and the problems of the country and the state are no secret, especially to the youth. Congress is releasing this manifesto for the youth.”

He said the thought behind this manifesto is to provide a strategy for future employment instead of making false promises. “This manifesto is not only the voice of Congress, as the party has taken feedback from youth after speaking to them and we have incorporated their suggestions,” he said, adding that in Uttar Pradesh, every 24 hours 880 youths lose their job.

Slamming the government at the centre and the state, the Congress leader said, “Under BJP government in the last five years, over 16 lakh youth have lost their employment.”

He said that elections are upon us in Uttar Pradesh and a vision is required for the same. “Only Congress can lend that vision to UP. We don’t spread hatred but we unite them,” he said, adding that “with the energy of youth, we want to make a new UP”.

Addressing the media, Priyanka Gandhi spoke about the preparation and intent behind the manifesto. She said: “To arrive at this manifesto, we held meetings with youth in every district to understand their problems and how to make their future bright. The suggestions have been mentioned in it.”

She said that all youth expressed their anguish for jobs despite big promises. “Our manifesto is to solve the issues of the youth. We have promised 20 lakh employment out of which 8 lakh employment would be granted under reservation, including for women. The process of examinations will be strengthened so that exams are not cancelled. The faith that youth have lost in the examination process will be brought back.”

She said that this manifesto is for seven crore aspiring youths. She also said that 1.5 lakh teacher vacancy, 38,000 teacher vacancy in medium schools, 6,000 vacant post of doctors, 1 lakh post vacant in police, 20,000 aanganwadi and  27,000 aanganwadis sahakiyas are vacant which will be filled.

Competitive exams will be free. We will also make travel by road and rail free for those appearing in exams.

A job calendar will be created with details of exams, results and appointments. And, if this is not followed, then a fine will be imposed and the UP education budget will be increased, she added.

Discussing the drug menace in youth in the state, she said: “To stop drug menace, we will make a centre in Lucknow that will work for counselling and it will have four more camps. For cricket, a world level academy would be set up. In general sports, an academy would be set up to promote local sports like bow and arrow sport in Sonebhadra and Kushti in western Uttar Pradesh. The motive is to develop these sports and to make them capable of competing at Olympics level.”

The Congress leader said that we wish to do positive politics. “This youth manifesto is our commitment to fulfil the promises. Most of the campaigning going on today is more about communal and caste lines,” she said.
