NEW DELHI: Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi on the occasion of the party’s 137th foundation day on Thursday, asserted that it has confronted several challenges and demonstrated resilience. In her speech she mentioned that divisive ideologies anchored in hate which had no role whatsoever to play in our freedom movement are now causing havoc on the secular fabric of our society.

She also said that the BJP is rewriting history to give themselves a role they do not deserve.

In a video statement, Sonia Gandhi said, “136 years ago today, the Congress was founded and established. Over the decades, it has confronted several challenges and it has always demonstrated its resilience.”

She said that today, we rededicate ourselves to the ideals, values and principles of our organisation that have been shaped, guided and inspired by some of the greatest, noblest and most selfless Indians of the 20th century.

Hitting out at the BJP indirectly, Sonia Gandhi said, “Divisive ideologies anchored in hate and prejudice, which had no role whatsoever to play in our freedom movement are now causing havoc on the secular fabric of our society.

“They are rewriting history to give themselves a role they do not deserve. They inflame passions, instill fear and spread animosity. The finest traditions of our parliamentary democracy are being deliberately damaged. The Congress will fight these destructive forces with all might at its command,” the Congress chief said.

She further stated that let there be no doubt on our steadfast resolve. “We have never and we will never compromise on our fundamental beliefs that are part of our glorious legacy. Electoral ups and downs are inevitable but what is enduring and lasting is our commitment to the service of all people of our diverse society,” she added.

Her remarks came in the backdrop of suspension of 12 MPs from the entire session of recently concluded Winter session of Parliament.

Besides several protests against the suspension of MPs, the Congress has also launched a renewed attack on the BJP targeting the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) over its ideology.

Recently, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi referred to ‘Hindutva’ and ‘Hinduism’ and claimed that the two are different.

On the other hand, a video that went viral on social media from Congress’s 137th foundation day shows that the Congress flag fell from a pole as party interim chief Sonia Gandhi tried to unfurl it on the occasion.
