SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: Former National Investigation Agency (NIA) cop Rakesh Balwal, a 2012-batch IPS officer, was on Thursday made the new SSP of Srinagar — a politically surcharged region of Jammu and Kashmir that has recently seen multiple attacks on innocent civilians, migrants and security forces even as joint operations have flushed out top terrorists over the last three years.

Balwal, an officer of Manipur cadre belongs to Jammu region’s Udhampur district and has handled several counter terror probes. He replaces the incumbent Sandeep Choudhary, who is his batch mate. Choudhary goes to Cyber Crime Investigation Centre for Excellence

Srinagar also saw multiple transfers after its SSP traffic Javed Ahmad Koul was sent to Jammu as DIG traffic.

Poonch SSP Dr Vinod Kumar will look after Udhampur after incumbent Sargun Shukla was sent as staff officer (SO) to IG technical services.

Mohammad Aslam, SP, CID headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir, has been made SP Rajouri.
