CHANDIGARH: Looks like Indian cricket star Harbhajan Singh is all set to make his foray into politics. In a cryptic tweet, Congress Punjab chief and cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu shared a picture with this 2011 Cricket World Cup winning player saying “picture loaded with possibilities… With Bhajji the shining star.”

The new entry may actually come as a big boost to this party that is facing stiff competition from its former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh who has floated his own party ahead of the 2022 assembly elections.

The picture of Sidhu with Harbhajan, also known as turbanator, gives a clear indication that the latter may be entering politics and join the grand old party in the coming days.

According to party sources, Harbhajan was offered a job in Punjab Police as Deputy Superintendent of Police during the time of Shiromani Akali Dal government in the state in 2002. However, in 2012 his offer for the post was withdrawn after the then Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal made adverse remarks on Bhajji’s file.

The Congress has been witnessing infighting since earlier this year after Sidhu was elevated to the post of state party unit chief despite apprehensions from the then Punjab CM, Captain Amarinder Singh. Captain resigned from the post of Chief Minister at the end of September and announced the formation of his own party in October.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is originally known for its star power, is giving a tough competition to the Congress in the state. AAP too had recently put up pictures with actor Sonu Sood, indicating that actor may join the party soon. In the past, several celebrities, like Gulpanag and Bhagwant Mann, have contested as AAP candidates in Punjab. Mann is a sitting MP from Punjab’s Sangrur parliamentary constituency.
