NEW DELHI: The battle for the New Delhi Assembly Constituency has taken an intriguing turn with prominent candidates in the fray. BJP has fielded Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma, Congress is represented by Sandeep Dikshit, and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is contesting on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket.
The election has become a focal point of political drama as Mr Kejriwal leveled serious allegations against his rivals. He accused Mr Verma of distributing cash to sway voters and claimed that the Congress is colluding with the BJP. Furthermore, Kejriwal criticized Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit for allegedly failing to lodge a complaint against Mr Verma’s actions.
To gauge the mood on the ground, we spoke to several residents of the constituency.
Anurag Kumar, a resident of Mandi House, expressed his support for Mr Kejriwal, citing initiatives like free electricity, water, and bus rides for women as significant achievements. He also lauded the AAP’s decision to provide ₹2,100 to women under the Mahila Samman Yojna, describing it as a step toward empowerment.
However, the BJP camp remains confident about their candidate. Vivek Garg, an RTI activist and former BJP candidate from the Model Town constituency, predicted a landslide victory for Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma. “Pravesh has a track record of delivering schemes for the common people. I am confident he will win with a record margin,” said Mr. Garg.

Mr Garg also dismissed the Mahila Samman Yojna as unrealistic. “The promise of giving ₹2,100 to every woman in Delhi is a fraudulent claim. It is financially impossible and exceeds the budget of the Delhi Assembly. This is a sham scheme designed to mislead voters,” he asserted.
Regarding the Granthi Samman Yojna, aimed at benefiting priests, Garg accused Kejriwal of dishonesty. “He has no intention of supporting priests and has done everything to harm Delhi’s fabric,” he claimed. Garg further criticised Kejriwal’s governance, stating, “Kejriwal has turned Delhi into a Bangladesh-like state. He is the worst Chief Minister Delhi has ever had.”
With strong opinions and high stakes, the New Delhi constituency election promises to be a fiercely contested battle. The outcome will not only decide the fate of these candidates but also set the tone for the political narrative in the national capital.
