NEW DELHI: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is set to roll out its first advanced residential programme, ‘Advanced Flagship Program: Empowering Trusted Advisors – Unlocking the Potential of Family Enterprises,’ from January 7 to January 11, 2024.

The programme will take place at the ICAI Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad under the leadership of Dr. Nupur Pavan Bang, the Centre’s director-cum-dean.

Expanding Centres of Excellence

ICAI is enhancing its Centre of Excellence network with plans to establish 11 such centres across India. Currently, centres in Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Kolkata are operational. Over the next three years, new centres will be launched in Bengaluru, Sonipat (Haryana), Maharashtra, and other regions.

Programme Overview

This flagship programme is tailored to equip Chartered Accountants with the expertise to address challenges in family businesses. It will host 50 participants on a first-come, first-served basis, with eligibility reviewed by ICAI experts. Registrations are open on ICAI’s official website.

The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical learning through case studies, simulations, and group discussions. The five-day schedule includes:

  • Day 1: Understanding family businesses
  • Day 2: Next-generation nurturing and succession planning
  • Day 3: Family governance frameworks
  • Day 4: Conflict resolution in family businesses
  • Day 5: Growth strategies, fundraising, and ownership structuring

Programme Fees

The registration fee is ₹50,000 plus 18% GST, which covers accommodation and meals at the Hyderabad Centre of Excellence. ICAI plans to introduce future batches based on the performance of this inaugural programme.

AI-Powered Tool: CA-GPT

To strengthen members’ access to resources, ICAI has launched CA-GPT, an AI-driven tool that provides students and members with data from ICAI’s internal database. Unlike general search engines, CA-GPT retrieves answers only from ICAI-approved materials, including study guides, question banks, and company information.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. During British rule, the Companies Act of 1913 mandated companies to maintain accounts audited by certified auditors, leading to the introduction of the Government Diploma in Accounting (GDA) in 1918. The Indian Accountancy Board, established in 1932, standardized auditing practices, and the GDA was abolished in 1943.

Post-independence, the Chartered Accountants Act of 1949 led to the formation of ICAI on July 1, 1949. It is now a statutory body under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, responsible for regulating Chartered Accountancy in India. ICAI is globally recognized, with mutual agreements with international accounting bodies and membership in organizations like IFAC and SAFA.

Today, ICAI is one of the largest professional accounting bodies globally, with over 400,000 members. It plays a vital role in setting accounting and auditing standards and fostering the professional growth of its members.
