NEW DELHI: A wild elephant met a tragic end after being electrocuted in the Madhupur Paroliguri village of Dibrugarh district. The incident occurred on the night of December 19 when the elephant came into contact with an 11,000-volt high-tension power line that was hanging dangerously low.

Highlighting a lack of accountability and action, the inaction of the power department has resulted in the death of the wild elephant. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Dibrugarh, BV Sandeep, confirmed the incident, stating, “A wild elephant died due to electrocution at the Madhupur Parolinguri village, which was a part of the forest area. A herd of wild elephants had been passing through the village when the unfortunate incident occurred.”

The department conducted an autopsy on the elephant and subsequently buried the carcass. DFO Sandeep criticized the power department’s apathy, questioning, “How could the power department allow such high-voltage power lines to pass through a forest area especially when it is also an elephant corridor?”

The power line which was precariously suspended over agricultural fields for over two years now posed a significant threat to both humans and wildlife. The power department failed to take corrective measures to rectify the issue despite numerous complaints from residents. This gross negligence has not only endangered lives but has also hampered agricultural activities in the area. Farmers have been unable to cultivate their lands, and are scared of the potential hazards posed by the exposed power lines.

This tragic incident brings to light the urgent need for corrective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. The death of the wild elephant due to electrocution is a grim reminder of the dangers posed by neglected infrastructure and it underscores the importance of maintaining power lines and responding promptly to safety concerns. The local community, along with environmentalists, is calling for swift action to prevent further tragedies and to hold the power department accountable for its negligence.
