NEW DELHI: In an exclusive conversation with Rohan Dua, the legendary Shankar Mahadevan opened up about his musical journey and the profound impact Ustaad Zakir Hussain had on his life and career. Reflecting on the loss of the tabla maestro, Shankar shared how Zakir’s teachings and presence shaped not only his music but also his personal life.

The void left by Zakir’s passing is immense, as Shankar poignantly noted that the tabla would never sound the same again without him.

Shankar fondly recalled the unforgettable moments he shared with Zakir Hussain over their 25 years of collaboration. “Every single tabla player aspires to become Zakir Hussain,” Shankar said, adding, “The musical and personal contributions Zakir made to my life are beyond words.” For Shankar, a huge part of the music he creates today is a direct result of Zakir’s influence.

Their bond went beyond music; they lived, toured, composed, and shared countless experiences together. “We roamed together, lived together, ate together, sang together, traveled together, stayed together, composed together, laughed together, and cried together,” Shankar reminisced.

Shankar also highlighted a recent moment in their journey together, recalling the “Four Aces” concert series held in London and Birmingham just a few months ago. Despite his immense success, Zakir’s humility remained remarkable.

“The most incredible thing we’ve all learned from him is how to remain humble at the pinnacle of success,” Shankar explained. Zakir always showed kindness, compassion, and genuine care for fellow musicians, often stepping back from the limelight to let others shine.
