The state government has also mandated that safe houses be set up within government rest houses or, if necessary, in private accommodations on a rental basis.
This initiative aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Shakti Vahini case, which emphasized the need for the protection of interfaith and intercaste couples. The court recognized the fundamental right of individuals to choose their partners and directed state governments to take measures to ensure their safety. By implementing these guidelines, Maharashtra is setting a precedent for other states to follow.
