NEW DELHI: Delhi’s former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has raised alarm over the deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital by writing a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Citing a series of alarming statistics and incidents, Kejriwal has requested an urgent meeting with Shah to discuss the issue and seek solutions.

In his letter, Kejriwal expressed concern over the rising crimes in Delhi, particularly against women, and criticized the inefficacy of the current law enforcement system. “It is extremely disheartening that Delhi is now being recognized as the ‘crime capital’ both nationally and internationally,” wrote Kejriwal.

Highlighting key data, he stated, “Among India’s 19 metro cities, Delhi ranks first in crimes against women and murder cases. There has been a 350% rise in drug-related crimes since 2019. On average, three women are raped every day, and our traders face extortion calls every other day.”

The Chief Minister also pointed out the growing threat of organized crime and extortion gangs in the city. “Extortion gangs and gangsters have become active in every street. Drug mafias have spread their reach across Delhi, leaving citizens increasingly unsafe,” he added.

Kejriwal emphasized the psychological toll that bomb threats at schools and public spaces have had on Delhi residents. “Over the past six months, more than 300 schools and colleges, over 100 hospitals, and major facilities like airports and malls have received bomb threats. Even if these threats turn out to be hoaxes, can you imagine the trauma children and parents go through?”

As law and order in Delhi falls under the jurisdiction of the Union Government, the Chief Minister urged the Home Minister to prioritize this issue above political considerations. “It is shameful that under your supervision, our capital is being labeled as ‘rape capital,’ ‘drug capital,’ and ‘gangster capital.’ This is a direct reflection of the failing law enforcement,” he asserted.

Kejriwal’s letter concludes with a plea for immediate corrective action and a request for an appointment to provide further insights. “We need to rise above politics to address this dire situation. I am looking forward to your prompt response,” he wrote.

This development comes amidst growing public concerns about safety in Delhi, as residents and stakeholders demand swift and effective measures to restore law and order in the capital.
