NEW DELHI: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is preparing to roll out the first LCA Tejas Mk1A fighter jet from its Nashik production facility by March 2025. The Nashik plant, inaugurated in 2023 by Defense Secretary Giridhar Aramane, serves as HAL’s third production line for the Light Combat Aircraft program. Together with the Bengaluru lines, the facility will enable an annual production capacity of 24 Tejas Mk1A jets.

The Tejas Mk1A features an advanced AESA radar for superior target detection and tracking, along with an electronic warfare suite that offers robust protection against radar detection and missile threats. Its capability to deploy Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles ensures dominance in long-range air-to-air engagements. Enhanced avionics improve situational awareness, allowing for precise and efficient operations.

Designed for reliability, the Tejas Mk1A incorporates a modular structure for easier maintenance and integrates the powerful GE F404-IN20 engine for superior performance. With increased payload capacity and stealth features, it excels across diverse missions while reducing the risk of detection.

These improvements position the Tejas Mk1A as a formidable asset for the Indian Air Force (IAF), which has already ordered 73 units and is in discussions for an additional 97 aircraft.

Previously used for manufacturing Sukhoi Su-30MKIs, the Nashik plant has undergone a significant transformation under HAL’s leadership.

The rollout of the Tejas Mk1A is expected to strengthen India’s air power while boosting the domestic defense sector. With plans to further scale up production to 30 units annually by 2026, HAL is poised to meet growing demands from the IAF and potentially secure international export orders.

This development highlights India’s commitment to enhancing its defense manufacturing capabilities and its evolving role as a global player in the aerospace industry.
