Mick Schumacher is leaving his role as Mercedes’ reserve driver to focus on full-time racing. He confirmed plans to join Renault-owned Alpine in the World Endurance Championship in 2025, seeking to return to competitive motorsport.
New Delhi: Mick Schumacher, the 25-year-old son of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, has decided to leave his role as Mercedes’ reserve driver at the end of the 2024 season. This marks a significant turning point in the young driver’s career, as he seeks to return to full-time racing.
Schumacher’s departure comes after he expressed his desire to focus on competitive racing rather than continuing his role as a reserve driver, which involved limited track time. Reflecting on his decision, Schumacher admitted, “Watching these cars race and not sitting in the cockpit myself is tough. I want to get back to focusing 100% on racing. I want to be fully committed to the sporting side of motorsport. Ultimately, it is racing that you want to do as a driver, it is racing that gives you that feeling you love.” His passion for racing has been a driving force behind his decision to move on from his reserve driver position with Mercedes.

While Schumacher has not revealed his exact plans, he has confirmed that he will continue racing with Renault-owned Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) starting in 2025. This move signals his commitment to pursuing a career in motorsport outside of Formula One, where he hopes to make his mark in endurance racing.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged Schumacher’s dedication during his time with the team, praising his hard work, determination, and diligence. Wolff stated, “From his work in the simulator, testing of various cars, and being part of the trackside team, we couldn’t have asked for any more from him. However, Mick is first and foremost a racing driver, and I fully understand his desire to pursue a full-time racing career.”
Schumacher’s departure from Mercedes paves the way for Valtteri Bottas, who will leave Sauber at the end of the year, to take over the role of reserve driver for the team. Bottas, a seasoned F1 driver, is expected to bring valuable experience to the position.
Schumacher’s decision to leave Mercedes reflects his deep desire to compete at the highest level and not just be a part of the team from the sidelines. With his move to the World Endurance Championship and his continued pursuit of a racing career, Mick Schumacher is set to carve his path in motorsport, following in the footsteps of his father, Michael Schumacher, while forging his legacy.
