CBI files chargesheet in RG Kar hospital case

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday submitted a chargesheet before the Court of Special Judge, implicating five individuals in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday submitted a chargesheet before the Court of Special Judge, implicating five individuals in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata. The charges have been framed under Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy, along with Sections 409, 420, 468, and 471 of the IPC for charges such as criminal breach of trust, cheating, and forgery. Additionally, provisions of Sections 7 and 13(2) read with Section 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act have been invoked.

 

The case originated following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, prompting the CBI to register the case on August 24. The investigation aimed to uncover financial irregularities in the hospital’s administration.

The chargesheet names Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the then Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, as the prime accused. Other individuals charged include Dr. Ashish Kumar Pandey, the then House Staff member at the hospital, and the proprietors of Hazra Medical, Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra. Afsar Ali Khan, identified as an additional security personnel and a key figure at Eshan Café, has also been implicated.

 

Initially, the case was registered by the Kolkata Police on August 19 under Section 120B read with Section 420 of the IPC and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. However, following allegations of procedural lapses, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI.

The alleged irregularities pertain to financial mismanagement and unauthorized activities involving hospital resources. The CBI investigation revealed that these activities were carried out in collusion, causing significant financial losses to the institution. Further proceedings in the case are awaited.
