NEW DELHI: Dutch hockey sensation Maria Verschoor is set to make her debut in the inaugural Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25, playing for Soorma Hockey Club. A key player for the Netherlands national team, Verschoor is thrilled about the opportunity to play in India and be part of this groundbreaking league.
“I’m really looking forward to this adventure,” said Verschoor. “Earlier this year, during the FIH Pro League in India, I was amazed by the passion and energy of the fans. Hockey truly thrives here, and the atmosphere in the stadiums is unmatched.”
The Women’s HIL marks a historic moment for hockey in India, and Verschoor is proud to be part of its first season. “It’s incredible to see a league like this for women in India. The mix of international players from different countries will bring fresh styles and ideas to the game, making it exciting for players and fans alike. I hope we can deliver great matches and show how thrilling women’s hockey can be,” she said.

Beyond hockey, Verschoor has a passion for water sports, particularly kitesurfing, and is pursuing a degree in psychology. “Psychology fascinates me, especially in understanding team dynamics. It’s something I want to explore more in the future,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Verschoor is optimistic about the league’s potential. “With four teams competing this year and plans to expand, this is just the beginning. I’m thrilled to be part of this journey and can’t wait to see how the Women’s HIL grows,” she concluded.
