NEW DELHI: In a significant development, Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College (KMC) has declared the election of two Central Councillors null and void. The decision, announced on Monday, cites violations of the Delhi High Court’s November 11 order and the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines. The affected councillors, Chirag, a BA Hons Program student, and Gurdeep Chhwari from BA Hons Sanskrit, were originally declared winners for the Central Councillor posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.

This action follows Delhi University’s mandate requiring all candidates to sign an affidavit pledging not to use dhols, or fireworks, or participate in roadshows after the election results are announced. The affidavit was part of the university’s efforts to ensure a peaceful and orderly post-election environment, in line with legal and procedural guidelines.

The declaration of these election results as null and void underscores the university’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the election process. The directive from the Delhi High Court aimed to curb excessive celebrations and potential disruptions, aligning with the Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendations for conducting student elections.

The DUSU elections are a critical barometer of student sentiment and political engagement at Delhi University. The university’s stringent measures highlight its dedication to creating a fair and respectful electoral environment. This decision may also influence future elections, emphasizing the need for candidates to comply with all regulations.
