NEW DELHI: The NDA-led Mahayuti alliance is leading with over 211 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, according to early trends from the Election Commission of India.

The MVA is ahead on 66 seats in the initial trends. With the majority mark at 145 seats, if these trends hold, the Mahayuti alliance is set to return to power in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra voted for 288 seats in a single phase on November 20, while Jharkhand’s 81 seats voted in two phases—November 13 and November 20. The counting of votes for both states began at 8 AM on November 23.

The Mahayuti alliance comprises the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, Ajit Pawar’s NCP, JSS, RSVA, and RYSP. The MVA includes the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), Sharad Pawar’s NCP-SP, and PWPI.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP faced setbacks in Maharashtra, winning just 9 of the 28 seats it contested, compared to 23 out of 25 seats in the 2019 general elections. Aditya Uddhav Thackeray from Shiv Sena (UBT) leads from Worli with 11,251 votes, while Milind Murli Deora is trailing him with 10,853 votes.

On the ground, public sentiment gathered by The New Indian reflects strong hopes pinned on Aditya Thackeray.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Amit Thackeray, son of Raj Thackeray, is trailing from the Mahim seat. NCP (SCP) candidate Rohit Pawar is trailing from Karjat Jamkhed, while Congress’s Balasaheb Thorat is trailing from the Sangamner seat.

Counting votes for the Maharashtra assembly elections began at 8 am on Saturday, Nov 23. From the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP contested 149 assembly seats, Shiv Sena 81 seats, and the NCP fielded candidates in 59 constituencies. In the opposition’s combine, the Congress fielded 101 candidates, Shiv Sena (UBT) 95, and NCP (SP) put up 86 candidates.
