Delhi High Court to hear Arvind Kejriwal’s plea for official residence in Delhi

NEW DELHI – The Delhi High Court is set to hear fresh arguments today in response to a petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, seeking an official residence in Delhi. Kejriwal, who recently stepped down as the Chief Minister of Delhi, vacated his official bungalow at 6, Flagstaff Road, on October 4 and is temporarily residing in a party member’s house near Mandi House.

Kejriwal’s petition argues that he is entitled to accommodation under the Centre’s guidelines, which stipulate that the president of a recognized national political party may be allotted a residence in the capital if they do not own or have another government-allotted home in Delhi. AAP’s counsel emphasized that Kejriwal, as the national convenor and president of AAP, meets these criteria and should therefore be provided with suitable official housing.

The party had initially submitted a formal request to the relevant authorities on September 20, followed by a reminder to expedite the process. During an earlier hearing, the court asked the Centre to present its position on the matter and scheduled today’s hearing for further arguments. According to AAP’s counsel, Kejriwal’s residence must be located in a central area of Delhi for logistical reasons associated with his role as party president.

The Guidelines for Allotment of Accommodation from the General Pool to Political Parties specify that each recognized national party is entitled to one official residence for its president, provided certain conditions are met. AAP’s counsel has contended that Kejriwal’s current circumstances comply with all outlined requirements and that the Centre should move forward in allocating him a centrally-located residence.

The High Court’s decision in this case will have implications for AAP’s operations in the capital, as the party awaits clarity on Kejriwal’s official accommodations following his resignation from his former governmental role.
