J&K Cabinet passes resolution for restoration of statehood

SRINAGAR: The newly formed Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, passed a significant motion today, calling on the Central Government to reinstate statehood to the region.

 

In its first official cabinet meeting, the Cabinet endorsed a resolution urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration to return full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Sources confirmed that a draft has been finalized, and the Chief Minister is scheduled to deliver it personally to the Prime Minister in New Delhi within the coming days.

 

At the meeting, ministers tackled pressing administrative challenges and laid out key priorities for governance. They discussed the need for streamlined operations, addressing citizen grievances, and promoting transparency across government institutions. Ongoing developmental projects were also reviewed to ensure timely progress.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and ministers Sakeena Masood Itoo, Javed Ahmad Rana, Javid Ahmad Dar, and Satish Sharma were present at the session.

 

The resolution comes just a day after the Congress party opted not to join the Council of Ministers, expressing dissatisfaction with the delay in restoring statehood. JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra reiterated Congress’s commitment to continue pushing for this cause, stating that the party remains resolute in its stance.

 

Meanwhile, National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah voiced optimism that statehood would soon be restored. He mentioned that the Supreme Court is set to hear an appeal on the matter in the coming months, underscoring that discussions regarding the issue have been ongoing.
