NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Abhidhamma Divas and celebrated the recognition of Pali as a classical language at a grand event held at Vigyan Bhawan today. The event, organized by the Ministry of Culture in association with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), marked a significant milestone in the preservation and promotion of India’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage.
In his inaugural address, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of Pali in the context of Buddhist teachings and Indian culture. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote the Pali language, which holds a special place in the Buddhist tradition. “The recognition of Pali as a classical language is a tribute to the profound teachings of Lord Buddha and a step towards preserving our ancient heritage,” said Modi.
The event featured a special talk on the “Significance of Pali as India’s Classical Language” and a Dhammasagani Matika Path (Pali Chanting) by venerable monks. Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, were also present and delivered addresses highlighting the cultural and historical significance of the day.

The International Abhidhamma Divas commemorates the descent of Lord Buddha from the celestial realm of the thirty-three divine beings (Tavatimsa-devaloka) to Sankassiya, known today as Sankisa Basantapur in Uttar Pradesh. This auspicious day coincides with the end of the first rainy retreat and the Pavarana festival, making it a significant occasion for Buddhists worldwide.
The recent recognition of Pali as a classical language, along with Marathi, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali, enhances the significance of this year’s celebrations. The Union Cabinet’s decision to confer classical status on these languages underscores the government’s commitment to preserving India’s diverse linguistic heritage.
The event concluded with a cultural program showcasing traditional Buddhist music and dance, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of India. The celebration of International Abhidhamma Divas and the recognition of Pali as a classical language is expected to foster greater appreciation and understanding of India’s ancient traditions and promote global peace and harmony.
