NEW DELHI: Jagmohan Anand of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Karnal assembly seat in the 2024 Haryana elections, receiving a total of 90,006 votes. The vote counting commenced at 8 AM, and Anand maintained a strong lead throughout, ultimately surpassing Congress candidate Sumita Virk, who secured 56,354 votes.

From the outset of the counting process, Anand’s lead was considerable, reaching a peak of over 33,600 votes. As the final round of counting wrapped up, his decisive victory underscored the BJP’s enduring influence in the region, marking a significant success for the party in this competitive constituency.

The main candidates in the Karnal Legislative Assembly constituency of Haryana include Jagmohan Anand from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sumita Virk from Congress, Surjeet Singh from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Sunil Bindal from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Jetender Royal from the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). The JJP is allied with the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) in the state, while the INLD has formed a coalition with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Karnal is one of the 90 Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) constituencies in Haryana, situated in the northern region of the state. Classified as an urban constituency, it falls within Karnal district. The reservation status for this seat is general. The Karnal Assembly constituency is part of the 5th Karnal (General) Lok Sabha constituency.

Regarding the Karnal Assembly seat in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP emerged as the leading party in this segment in 2024, with Manohar Lal winning the Karnal Lok Sabha seat by defeating Divyanshu Budhiraja of the INC. Similarly, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP also led in this assembly segment, with Sanjay Bhatia securing victory against Kuldip Sharma of the INC.

In the 2014 Haryana Assembly elections, Manohar Lal Khattar of the BJP won the Karnal seat, defeating Jai Parkash Gupta of the IND by a significant margin of 63,773 votes, accounting for 45.42% of the total votes cast. The BJP secured a vote share of 58.75% in this constituency.

In the 2009 Haryana Assembly elections, Sumita Singh of the INC emerged victorious in Karnal, defeating Jai Parkash of HJCBL by a margin of 3,731 votes, which represented 3.68% of the total votes cast. The INC garnered a vote share of 35.43% in this seat in 2009.
