NEW DELHI: NCP MP Supriya Sule revealed on Sunday that her phone and WhatsApp accounts were hacked.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sule warned, “My phone and WhatsApp have been hacked. No one should call or text me. I am filing a police complaint about this. Please note this.”

Sule is the daughter of NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar and a sitting MP from Baramati, Maharashtra.

This incident adds to the growing concerns about digital security among Indian political leaders. Last October, several Members of Parliament, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, shared screenshots of alerts they received from Apple, warning them of potential “state-sponsored” hacking attempts on their devices. Sources revealed that similar messages were received by members of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s office. Other prominent leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party’s Raghav Chadha, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, and Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, were also reportedly targeted.

In response to these claims, Apple clarified that while the notifications could indicate possible hacking attempts, they do not attribute them to any specific state-sponsored entity. The tech giant emphasized that state-sponsored attackers are typically well-funded and sophisticated, making detection challenging and sometimes imperfect. Apple acknowledged that some threat notifications could be false alarms and noted that it is unable to disclose specific details about these notifications, as doing so might enable attackers to adapt and evade detection in the future.
