NEW DELHI: Bangladesh is currently in turmoil following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country on August 5 amid escalating anti-government protests. The political upheaval has sparked a wave of violence, particularly targeting the Hindu minority community, leading to widespread condemnation from various quarters, including Bollywood stars like Preity Zinta and Raveena Tandon.

Both actresses have taken to social media to express their deep concern over the brutal attacks that have left many dead, displaced, and traumatized. Preity Zinta, known for her strong voice on social issues, shared her heartbreak on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Devastated & heartbroken to hear of the violence in Bangladesh against their minority population. People killed, families displaced, women violated & places of worship being vandalized & burnt. Hope the new govt. takes appropriate steps in stopping the violence & protecting its people. My thoughts & prayers for everyone facing hardship.” She emphasized the seriousness of the situation by using the hashtag #SaveBangladeshiHindus.

Raveena Tandon echoed similar sentiments, also on X, writing, “Deeply saddened and disturbed by the recent events in Bangladesh, where minority communities are facing severe violence and persecution. These shameful attacks are a stark reminder of the importance of standing up for justice and humanity, no matter where we are. I express my solidarity with the victims and call for an immediate end to this violence. It is essential that global leaders and influencers, especially from India, speak out against these atrocities and work together to protect the rights and dignity of all people. We must not remain silent in the face of such suffering.” Tandon’s message, accompanied by hashtags like #BangladeshBleeding and #Stop_Communal_Attack, resonated widely, sparking discussions online.

The silence from other Bollywood celebrities has been noticeable, with fans and followers urging more influential figures to speak out and condemn the attacks. However, actors like Sonam Kapoor and Sonu Sood have also voiced their concerns. Kapoor took to Instagram, stating, “This is horrible, let’s all pray for Bangladeshi people.” Meanwhile, Sonu Sood tweeted about the responsibility of Indian citizens to help those affected in Bangladesh, urging, “We should do our best to bring back all our fellow Indians from Bangladesh, so they get a good life here. This is not just the responsibility of our Government which is doing its best but also all of us.”

Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken views, criticised the lack of security in Muslim-majority nations, including Bangladesh, in a post on X.
