NEW DELHI: After Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country and reportedly reached India, the army took control.
In a press conference around 3:30 PM (IST), Bangladesh Army Chief General Wake-Uz Zaman announced that an interim government would be formed soon.
General Zaman said he would take full responsibility for bringing the situation under control and assured that the army would meet all the demands of the protesters.
The Ministry of External Affairs in India has advised all citizens to avoid traveling to Bangladesh and urged those residing there to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and remain in touch with the High Commission in Dhaka. However, India may face illegal migration as a consequence of the coup. Security has also been tightened outside the Bangladesh Embassy in New Delhi.

At least 300 people died when fresh violence erupted in Bangladesh on Monday, as the country witnessed a revival of student protests. The protests last month began with students calling for an end to a quota in government jobs for families of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. Reacting to the fresh violence, Hasina said the protesters who engaged in “sabotage” and destruction were no longer students but criminals.
The new wave of violence began on Sunday after protesters called for a “non-cooperation” effort, urging people not to pay taxes or utility bills and not to show up for work. While offices, banks, and factories opened, commuters in Dhaka and other cities faced challenges getting to their jobs.
Crowds flooded the streets, tore down police barriers, and entered the Prime Minister’s residence. Demonstrators attacked Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, a major public hospital in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area, torching several vehicles. The statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founder and father of Sheikh Hasina, was also vandalized by the protesters. The Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and the Awami League district office in Dhaka were set ablaze.
