SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will honour the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil conflict at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the victory today.

Before the Prime Minister’s arrival, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi arrived in Kargil this afternoon to participate in events related to the celebrations.

During his visit to Kargil in the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Prime Minister will virtually initiate the first blast of the Shinkun La tunnel project, which, upon completion, will be the world’s highest tunnel. This tunnel is being built on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha route in Ladakh UT. PM Modi will honour the soldiers who gave their lives during the Kargil War and address the soldiers at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass.

The Shinkun La tunnel, whose initial blast will be virtually initiated by the Prime Minister, will feature a 4.1-kilometer-long twin-tube tunnel at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha road. This tunnel will offer year-round connectivity to Leh and will be the highest tunnel globally upon completion.

“Shinkun La tunnel will not only ensure rapid and effective movement of armed forces and equipment but also promote economic and social growth in Ladakh,” stated an official to The New Indian ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Kargil.

The Shinkun La tunnel will be a twin-tube, double-lane tunnel with cross passages every 500 meters. It will include features like Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA), Mechanical Ventilation Systems, Fire Fighting Systems, and Communication Systems.

The tunnel will serve as a crucial link, connecting the Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh with the Zanskar Valley in Ladakh. There are currently two routes to Leh: the Srinagar-Zojila-Kargil-Leh and the Manali-Atal Tunnel-Sarchu-Leh.

Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations are held annually at the Drass War Memorial on July 26. On this day in 1999, the Indian Army, supported by the Indian Air Force, expelled the last Pakistani intruders from the Kargil Heights after nearly three months of war, during which around 500 Indian soldiers were martyred.
