Two soldiers martyred in Kulgam encounter

SRINAGAR: Two soldiers were martyred on Saturday during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The initial encounter occurred in Modergam village, where security forces initiated a search operation based on intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists.

Officials reported that security personnel were conducting a cordon-and-search operation in Modergam village of the South Kashmir district when the terrorists opened fire.

In a separate incident, contact was made with terrorists in the Frisal Chinnigam area of Kulgam. In the Modergam operation, Sep. Pradeep Kumar of 01 Para was killed in action, and in the Frisal Kulgam operation, Sep. Janjal Praveen Prabhakar of 01 RR was also killed in action. Both were critically injured during the encounter and were taken to 92 Base Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

IGP Kashmir Police Zone Vidhi Kumar Birdi told The New Indian, “The encounter is still ongoing, some bodies have been spotted at the site, and details will be shared once the operation concludes.”

Sources informed The New Indian that five terrorists have been killed in Chinnigam and three terrorists have been killed in Modergam Kulgam, although there is no official confirmation yet. The target house in the Modergam Kulgam operation has been destroyed.

Sources further said that the top Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Farooq Nali is believed to be among the terrorists killed in the encounter. Senior police officials indicated that today’s operation in Kulgam is a significant setback for Hizbul Mujahideen.
