NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi thanked the people of Wayanad for their love and support in his letter. He wrote, “When I faced abuse day by day, your unconditional love supported me. You were my refuge, my home, and my family. I never felt for even a moment that you have doubted me.”
Rahul Gandhi decided to retain the Raebareli seat in Uttar Pradesh and nominated his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Wayanad, Kerala, which he won in the Lok Sabha elections 2024 that concluded on June 4.
“I am sad but I am consoled because my sister Priyanka will be there to represent you. I am confident that she will do an excellent job of being your MP if you decide to give her an opportunity,” he further added in the letter.
In his earlier announcement, he mentioned that even though he is giving up the Wayanad seat, he will visit the place frequently. In the letter as well, he wrote, “My central commitment to both you and the people of Raebareli is that we will fight and defeat the hatred and violence being spread in the country.”
This marks Vadra’s electoral debut as she will contest the by-elections on July 10, the results of which will be announced on July 13.
“The party has decided that Rahul Gandhi should keep the Raebareli seat because it has been close to him and his family for generations. The people of the constituency and people in the Congress feel this will be good for the party as well. More importantly, he has received love from the people of Wayanad and people there want him to retain the seat. But the rules don’t allow this. So we have decided that Priyanka ji will contest from Wayanad,” he said while announcing the decision on Monday, June 17.
The Congress MP concluded the letter by writing, “You are part of my family and I will always be there for each and every one of you.”
