NEW DELHI: In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won in only three seats in Punjab. The winning candidates were Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in Sangrur, Raj Kumar Chabbewal in Hoshiarpur, and Malvinder Singh Kang from Anandpur Sahib. Hayer defeated Sukhpal Khaira of Congress by a large margin, while Chabbewal’s victory was significant for AAP as he is a prominent figure in Dalit politics.
Sitting MLA Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer emerged triumphant in the Sangrur constituency, defeating Congress’ Sukhpal Khaira by a substantial margin of 1,72,560 votes. In the 2019 elections, CM of Punjab Bhagwant Mann have won the same seats with margin of 4,13,561 votes. Similarly, Raj Kumar Chabbewal clinched the Hoshiarpur seat with a lead of 44,111 votes. Notably, AAP candidate Malvinder Singh Kang garnered 10,846 votes in the Anandpur Sahib constituency.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), both part of the INDIA bloc, conducted separate campaigns. In a departure from tradition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) contested the elections independently for the first time since 1996 in Punjab.
However, AAP’s performance in Punjab declined due to several reasons. These included the ongoing farmers’ protest, dissatisfaction with the Punjab government’s handling of law and order issues, unmet promises regarding sacrilege cases and drugs, and the arrest of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in a liquor-related case.

Despite an increase in vote share to 26.05% from 7.5% in 2019, AAP’s overall performance was disappointing. This could impact their future prospects as they have struggled to establish a strong presence outside Punjab over the past decade.
