SRINAGAR: At least five policemen, including an officer, were injured last night after army soldiers allegedly stormed the Kupwara Police Station and assaulted the officers.

An official reported that on Tuesday night, while investigating a case, a team from Police Station Kupwara raided the house of a Territorial Army jawan in Batapora village, Kupwara, and detained him for questioning.

After the police team returned from the village, soldiers led by an officer from the Territorial Army unit forcibly entered the police station in the middle of the night and allegedly attacked the policemen, including an officer.

Five policemen, including an officer, were injured in the assault, and four of them were transported to Srinagar’s Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) for treatment.

The four injured officers were identified as Constable Saleem Mushtaq, Constable Zahoor Ahmad, Imtiyaz Ahmad Malik, and Rayees Khan, both Special Police Officers (SPOs). The condition of all the injured is reported to be stable.

The official stated that before leaving the Police Station, a policeman was taken by the Army and released after 3 am.

There was no official statement from the police, but a case FIR No 121/2024 under several sections including rioting, attempted murder, abduction, and robbery (186, 332, 307, 342, 147, 149, 392, 397, 365 IPC) and 7/25 Arms Act has been registered at Police Station Kupwara against the Army.

CCTV footage of the Police Station shows that Army personnel, led by a senior officer, forcibly entered the station and assaulted the policemen.

The Srinagar-based defense spokesperson denied allegations that their soldiers had beaten up policemen in Kupwara, describing the incident as a result of “minor differences” between the police and the Territorial Army.

“Reports of an altercation between police and Army personnel and the subsequent beating of police personnel are unfounded and incorrect. Minor differences between the police personnel and a Territorial Army unit over an operational matter have been amicably resolved,” the spokesperson said.
