Abdul Malik was shot after Uttarakhand High Court verdict overturned Haldwani Municipal Corporation notice.

NEW DELHI: Abdul Malik Mohammed Yunus Isa, the former mayor of Malegaon, and an AIMIM leader was shot in Nashik by unidentified assailants on Monday morning. The attackers fired multiple shots at him at around 1:20 am, while he was outside a restaurant along the Mumbai Agra Highway. In the attack, Malik got injured on the left side of his chest, left thigh, and right hand.

Malik was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Due to the severity of the injuries, he was later transferred to a private hospital in Nashik. Police registered an FIR against the two attackers under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including Section 307 (attempt to murder).

Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM chief termed the attack a conspiracy. He urged Maharashtra CM, Eknath Shinde, and DGP – Maharashtra to take immediate steps.

This incident comes two days after the Uttarakhand High Court’s judgment, overturned a notice to Abdul Malik regarding Haldwani Riots. The riots took place in Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura area on February 8, in the aftermath of the demolition of a madrasa and a prayer space that Malik built on allegedly illegally grabbed government land.

Following the riots, the Haldwani Municipal Corporation (HMC) issued a notice to Malik on April 25. The notice demanded Malik to pay Rs 2.6 crores for the damage caused to the public property by the riots. Malik then challenged the HMC notice in the Uttarakhand High Court.

Malik’s defence argued that the allegations against him must be first proved in the court, then only any recovery can be made. A bench headed by Justice Manoj Kumar quashed the notice on 25th May.

In the wake of the shooting, the Malegaon city police have increased the security presence in the area.
