New Delhi: Delhi voters participated in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 on Saturday to choose their Members of Parliament. The New Indian team visited the Khan Market area to gather insights on the issues concerning Delhiites and their expectations from the upcoming government.

 

Ajay Kumar, a voter from the New Delhi constituency, highlighted inflation as a significant concern, expressing skepticism about anyone’s ability to control it effectively. This sentiment was echoed by Monika, a homemaker, who emphasized the difficulties in managing daily expenses due to rising prices.

Naveen, a Chartered Accountant, believes India is on the right path. He suggested that subsidies are preferable to outright freebies, indicating a need for more sustainable economic measures. On the other hand, Akash, another voter, prioritized local issues like electricity, water, roads, and healthcare over national concerns when casting his vote.

 

The voter turnout in Delhi stood at 53.73% by 5 PM. North East Delhi recorded the highest turnout at 47.85% until 3 PM, followed by West Delhi at 44.91%, and North West Delhi at 44.78%.

In this election, several high-profile candidates are in the fray. Bansuri Swaraj of BJP, daughter of the late Sushma Swaraj, and AAP’s Somnath Bharti are key contenders in New Delhi.

 

The New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency is one of the seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi. It is a general category seat that includes parts of Central Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South East Delhi, and West Delhi districts.

 

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Meenakashi Lekhi won the seat by a margin of 256,504 votes, securing a total of 504,206 votes. She defeated INC candidate Ajay Makan, who received 247,702 votes.

 

As the elections proceed, voters’ focus remains on tackling inflation and improving local infrastructure, reflecting a blend of economic and daily life concerns influencing their choices.
