NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) removed famous Bhojpuri singer-cum-actor and party’s state executive committee member Pawan Singh for contesting as an independent candidate in Bihar’s Karakat Lok Sabha constituency against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s official candidate Upendra Kushwaha.
“You are contesting the Lok Sabha elections against the official candidate of the NDA. This action of yours is anti-party, which has tarnished the image of the party and is against party discipline. Therefore, for this anti-party activity, you are expelled from the party as per the orders of the Honorable State President,” said the official letter to Pawan Singh.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pawan Singh responded to his expulsion by saying in symbolism, “Even yesterday, in the Mahabharata, Abhimanyu was alone, despite Krishna and the Pandavas being present. He was surrounded and killed by demons in the Chakravyuha. Even today, on the battlefield, Abhimanyu is alone, but the people are with him.

The BJP had announced Pawan Singh as its candidate from West Bengal’s Asansol Lok Sabha constituency. However, a day later, Pawan Singh dropped out due to personal reasons.

On May 14, Pawan Singh’s mother, Pratima Singh, filed her nomination as an independent candidate. After some days, Pratima Singh withdrew her candidature from Karakat. The Election Commission confirmed Pratima Devi’s withdrawal.
Karakat Lok Sabha constituency is one of the forty Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar. This constituency came into existence in 2008. Karakat is considered a Kushwaha-dominated constituency. The caste data of this constituency shows that there are two lakh voters belonging to each Kushwaha, Rajput, and Yadav communities. Karakat Lok Sabha constituency is made up of six Assembly constituencies. Out of six, five constituencies were won by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and one seat was won by the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPIML). In the general elections of 2009 and 2019, Karakat was won by Mahabali Kushwaha of JDU. In 2014, Upendra Kushwaha of Rashtriya Lok Samata Party won. In 2021, Kushwaha merged RLSP into JDU, and in 2023, he formed RLM after resigning from JDU.

For the General Election of 2024, Upendra Kushwaha of Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) is the candidate for the NDA alliance, and Raja Ram Singh Kushwaha of CPI(ML) is the candidate for the INDIA block. Meanwhile, Pawan Singh is the independent candidate from the same seat.
