NEW DELHI : The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini made a triumphant return to its base port in Goa on 21st April 2024 after completing a historic transoceanic expedition spanning nearly two months. Well, in a groundbreaking achievement, two women officers of the Indian Navy, Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A, have completed a historic transoceanic expedition on the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini.
Flagged off from Goa on 28th February 2024 by renowned circumnavigator and mentor Cdr Abhilash Tomy (Retd), the journey saw the vessel navigate through the unpredictable Indian Ocean for 22 days before reaching Port Louis, Mauritius, on 21st March 2024. The officers navigate the vessel across the Indian Ocean, covering a distance of nearly 4,000 nautical miles over two months.
This historic achievement marks a new chapter in the Indian Navy’s sailing history and underscores the Navy’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in the maritime domain. The expedition also strengthened bilateral ties and fostered goodwill between India and Mauritius, as the officers interacted with government officials and personnel from the Mauritius Coast Guard during a stopover at Port Louis.

After a busy schedule, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa embarked on their return journey on 30th March 2024, facing the challenges of heavy winds and adverse sea conditions. However, their unwavering determination guided INSV Tarini safely back to Goa on 21st April 2024.
Looking ahead, the officers prepare for their next monumental voyage, a circumnavigation of the globe (Sagar Parikrama – IV expedition) on INSV Tarini scheduled to commence in September this year. This feat will inspire future generations, especially women, to participate in challenging maritime adventures.
The return of INSV Tarini was celebrated at the boat pool of INS Mandovi in Goa, symbolizing the collective achievement and camaraderie within the Indian Navy.
