Cyclonic storm to hit Andhra and Odisha

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi has begun a meeting into after Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a depression over southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on December 2 may intensify into a cyclonic storm over the next two days, leading into Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

IMD is calling this first post-monsoon cyclone as Jawad. PM chairs high level meeting to review preparedness to deal with Cyclone Jawad.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata on Wednesday had issued the warning for fishermen for next five days for both Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Coast.

“In anticipation of formation of cyclonic storm over Central Bay of Bengal, fishermen are advised not to venture into the deep sea on December 3,” the warning said.

The warning has come amid low pressure area created over south Thailand that concentrated into a depression.

 PM directs officials to take all necessary measures to ensure safe evacuation of people.
Ensure maintenance of all essential services and their quick restoration in case of disruption.
All concerned Ministries and Agencies working in synergy to proactively counter the impact of the cyclone. NDRF has pre-positioned 29 teams equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecom equipments etc; 33 teams on standby
Indian Coast Guard and Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief, search and rescue operations.
Air Force and Engineer task force units of Army are on standby for deployment. Disaster Relief teams and Medical Teams are also on standby along the eastern coast.
