New Delhi: Sudha Murty, renowned author, philanthropist, and Chairman of the Murty Trust,  addressed members of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA). She shared insights from her life, particularly about the demanding work schedule of her husband, Narayana Murthy, who had often worked 70-90 hours a week and had spent 222 days away from home. Despite this, she proudly stated that their children had maintained discipline.

Murty said, “When you are committed to a greater cause, it’s not a 9-5 job. Sacrifices are a must. But at the end of life, when you look back, like many people ask me Mr. Murty works for 90 hours, do you feel?  I said no. I used to tell my husband because you come so rarely home if children ask for something, don’t just say yes – because in your guilty feeling, if children ask for something, you will say yes.”

“There are many ways to tell children. If you become very strict, they won’t tell you anything; if you are very lenient, they take advantage. Then what to do? There is no magic formula. You need to tell children casually, sometimes with strictness. Sometimes you can’t even hit them; it is not correct. Raising your eyebrow, sometimes saying, ‘I am your best friend.’ Every tactic you know, use it, sometimes even emotional blackmailing,” she added.

A few months back, Narayana Murthy, Sudha Murthy’s husband and co-founder of Infosys, during an interview, suggested that Indian youth should work more than 70 hours a week. This statement sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with some criticising the remark while others supported his viewpoint.

On International Women’s Day, Sudha Murty was also announced as a Rajya Sabha MP. She expressed her delight at the opportunity to serve the public in this new capacity. “Women contribute significantly to the functioning of society and the economy. If they were to stop working, it would create a major imbalance and affect various aspects of daily life,” she wrote on X.
