NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Jayant Sinha has requested party president JP Nadda to relieve him from direct electoral duties, signalling his decision not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
Sinha aims to shift his focus towards combating global climate change, stating, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President Shri @JPNaddaji to relieve me of my direct electoral duties so that I can focus my efforts on combating global climate change in Bharat and around the world.”
Sinha, who has represented Hazaribagh in Jharkhand for the past ten years, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP leadership for providing him with numerous opportunities. He emphasised his continued commitment to working with the party on economic and governance issues.

This announcement comes on the heels of BJP MP Gautam Gambhir’s similar request to be relieved of political duties to concentrate on cricket commitments. Gambhir stated, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President JP Nadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi ji and Hon’ble HM Amit Shah ji for allowing me to serve the people. Jai Hind!”
Both leaders are opting out just as the BJP is preparing to release its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The party’s central election committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, engaged in a marathon meeting to discuss potential candidates, including high-profile names seeking reelection.

In addition to Sinha and Gambhir, other party leaders are considering stepping back from electoral contests. The BJP appears to be contemplating introducing several new faces, while some sitting MPs express their interest in focusing on organizational work.
While Sinha has been pivotal in implementing key initiatives such as the UDAN regional connectivity scheme and digital programs like ‘DigitalSky Drone policy’ and ‘DigiYatra,’ Gambhir’s announcement has added a sports-centric twist to the evolving political landscape.
The BJP’s decision to potentially field experienced leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in the upcoming election emphasises a strategic approach. The party is also considering encouraging ministers elected from the Rajya Sabha to contest from the Lok Sabha this time.
