NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old woman in Bihar’s Begusarai, along with her father and brother, was gunned down in what appears to be a horrific fallout from an alleged forced marriage.

The woman, identified as Neelu Kumari, along with her father, Umesh Yadav, and brother, Rajesh Yadav, were shot and killed in Vishnupur Ahuk village on Saturday evening. The alleged orchestrator of the crime is Neelu’s father-in-law, leading to a police investigation and escalating tensions in the area.

According to Sahibpur Kamal police station SHO Deepak Kumar, the tragedy unfolded during a visit by Umesh Yadav to Neelu’s in-laws. A heated argument ensued, escalating into a physical altercation. The situation took a deadly turn when Neelu’s father-in-law reportedly pulled out a gun, shooting all three victims at close range, resulting in immediate fatalities. The suspect fled the scene, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

Village head Subodh Kumar Yadav shed light on the underlying issue, describing it as a case of “pakadua vivah” or forced marriage. Neelu Kumari had been forcibly married to Himanshu Kumar aka Man Singh, around two and a half years ago.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Begusarai, Manish kumar emphasised the forced marriage angle, stating, “Approximately 1.5 years ago, Himanshu was forcibly married to Neelu. However, his family did not accept her. When Neelu, accompanied by her father and brother, visited her in-laws’ house after 1.5 years for a family function, her father-in-law became angry and refused to accept her. Multiple rounds of firing took place, resulting in the death of three people.”

The incident has sparked anger among relatives, leading to ongoing protests and a traffic jam on NH-31. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vinay Kumar Singh from Ballia and MLA Lallan Yadav from Sahibpur Kamal Assembly constituency arrived at the scene to pacify the agitated crowd and address the traffic disruption. The situation remains tense as authorities conduct investigations and search for the suspect.
