Rajya Sabha polls: TMC mominates Sagarika Ghose and 2 others

NEW DELHI: With the Rajya Sabha elections slated for February 27 to fill its 56 seats, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced its nominees for the Upper House. Among the candidates put forward by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC are prominent figures Sagarika Ghose, Sushmita Dev, Md Nadimul Haque, and Mamata Bala Thakur.

As the biennial elections draw closer, political manoeuvring is underway to secure seats in the Upper House. The TMC, known for its astute strategising, has carefully selected candidates to represent its interests in the Rajya Sabha.

On Sunday, taking to microblogging site X, TMC stated, “We are pleased to announce the candidature of @sagarikaghose, @SushmitaDevAITC, @MdNadimulHaque6, and Mamata Bala Thakur for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections.” They added, “We extend our heartfelt wishes to them and hope they will work towards upholding Trinamool’s enduring legacy of indomitable spirit and advocacy for the rights of every Indian.”

For the unversed, this marks Sagarika Ghose’s debut in the realm of politics. Having worked with news organisations like The Times of India, Outlook, The Indian Express, and CNN-IBN, Ghosh is a seasoned journalist and commentator known for her incisive analysis and fearless journalism, bringing a wealth of experience and insight to the political arena. She is also married to renowned journalist and author Rajdeep Sardesai.

TMC leader Sushmita Dev, is a former Member of Parliament, has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and social justice.

Md Nadimul Haque is an educationist and community leader, who has long been associated with grassroots movements and initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalised communities. Mamata Bala Thakur is a social worker and advocate for the underprivileged.
