Kerala CM launches Global Science Festival for month-long scientific extravaganza

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A grand celebration of science unfolded on Monday as the Global Science Festival of Kerala commenced at Bio 360 Life Sciences Park, Thonnakkal. Spanning 25 acres, the festival boasts 51 attractions distributed across 18 pavilions, covering an expansive two and a half lakh square feet. Each pavilion holds a wealth of scientific knowledge for festival-goers to explore.

The Global Science Festival Kerala aims to be a comprehensive celebration of knowledge, focusing on life sciences. The festival was inaugurated at 6 pm by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. NASA Scientist Madhulika Guhathakurta was the chief guest at the opening ceremony, presided over by Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal. Following the inauguration, a musical programme led by singer M. G. Sreekumar captivated the audience.

Incorporating cutting-edge technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), certain pavilions offer immersive experiences, including a microscopic model of the universe, a poignant portrayal of war’s desolation, and breathtaking views of Earth from the International Space Station.

Visitors can also marvel at a life-size dinosaur skeleton, a replica of the HMS Beagle ship, the Museum of the Moon, and more, promising both education and entertainment. Notable attractions include the Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technological Museum from Bangalore, featuring the Seeds of Culture travelling exhibition.

The festival offered a diverse lineup, including public talks, lecture programmes, and arts and cultural events, beginning from January 16, with the D. Krishna Warrier Memorial Lecture by a NASA scientist. Renowned film star Navya Nair and other prominent figures in the arts and culture scene will also showcase their talents during the festival.

One of the highlights is the night sky-watching and tenting experience, scheduled to commence on Jan 20. Limited availability for Night Skywatching and Tenting experiences is on preset days. Festival tickets and packages can be purchased online through the official website www.gsfk.org.
