Himanta leads BJP to landslide victory in NCHAC elections

GUWAHATI: In a significant turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding success in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) elections held in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Friday.

The BJP has captured an overwhelming 25 out of the 28 seats in the council, showcasing a dominant performance. Meanwhile, the main rival, the Congress, faced a crushing defeat, failing to secure a single seat.

A noteworthy aspect of the elections is the voting share. With a total of 99,478 votes cast in the NC Hills region, the BJP garnered an impressive 54,483 votes, constituting 54.77 per cent, while the Congress received 8,707 votes, making up 8.75 per cent.

It is noteworthy that the BJP had already clinched victory in six constituencies uncontested. The counting of votes commenced early yesterday for the remaining 22 constituencies under stringent security measures.

Previously, BJP candidates, who filed nominations for the NCHAC elections, succeeded in four constituencies, leading to a solitary race after the final withdrawal of nominations by candidates from the Congress and other parties, including Independents.

The consistent victories in council and municipal elections are attributed to the influence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, particularly his rapport with tribal communities, as seen in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) elections. Taking to X, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the success to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He stated, “This victory reflects people’s immense faith in the pro-poor and development-oriented vision of our party. With the blessings of Hon’ble PM, we will fulfill all promises made to the people of Dima Hasao.”

Another pivotal figure in the NCHAC elections was Assam Minister and senior BJP leader Pijush Hazarika, who had been actively present in the area for a month, beginning from December 5, and addressed over 100 meetings.

Following his victory in the Dihangi MAC, incumbent CEM Debolal Gorlosa expressed gratitude, attributing the votes to the BJP’s commendable work. Gorlosa remarked, “I want to thank the people and the leaders of the BJP, especially the Assam CM, who gave us the chance to work here in Dima Hasao.”
