JAMMU: Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Jammu on January 9 for a comprehensive review of the security situation in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. Additionally, he will preside over an event titled ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ and evaluate the BJP’s readiness for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

This visit follows a high-level security review meeting chaired by Shah in New Delhi earlier this week. The meeting specifically addressed the escalation of terrorist attacks in Poonch and Rajouri during 2023, which resulted in the loss of 19 soldiers in four separate incidents. The meeting saw the participation of key officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Army, paramilitary forces, senior police officers from Jammu and Kashmir, and representatives from the civil administration.

The decision to visit Jammu comes after Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande, visited Rajouri on December 27. This visit aimed to assess the overall situation following the martyrdom of four soldiers in a terrorist ambush and the mysterious killing of three civilians at Dera Ki Gali in the Surankote area of Poonch District on December 21.

Official sources indicate that Shah will engage in discussions and interactions with top Army Commanders, senior local officers from the police and civil administration, and is likely to meet with local civilians.

Upon his return from Rajouri-Poonch, the minister will participate in a programme in Jammu related to ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.’ Additionally, he will convene with senior leaders of the BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit to discuss the party’s preparations for the upcoming polls in the Union Territory.
