N Biren Singh urges people as unrest hits Manipur tourism

IMPHAL: In a bid to foster unity and tranquility in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has appealed to end the ongoing crisis through constructive dialogues, steering away from aggressive measures.

During a press interaction at the Manipur Information and Public Relations Department, Chief Minister Biren emphasised the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis through dialogue rather than resorting to violence. Acknowledging the necessity of patience in finding a comprehensive solution, he urged all parties involved to embrace peace and cooperation.

The Chief Minister addressed the recent blockade of Manipur State Transport inter-district passenger buses on designated routes (Imphal-Kangpokpi-Senapati and Imphal-Bishnupur-Churachandpur) by Kuki-Zo protesters. This blockade was a response to the government’s notification to reopen these routes with enhanced security measures. Biren reassured that his administration would refrain from using disproportionate force, emphasising a shared responsibility towards all residents, regardless of their group affiliations.

As the festive season approached, Biren made a heartfelt appeal for those involved in the crisis to cease violence and engage in constructive dialogues. He highlighted the significance of cohabitation and understanding among the populace.

Acknowledging the desire of many Kuki individuals to live harmoniously within the state, Biren addressed the dissent as originating from a limited section of the community. He urged organisations like the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) to recognise the futility of violence and work towards peaceful resolution.

Responding to the actions of the Assam Rifles in contrast with the government’s notification on opening travel restrictions on the highway passing through Churachandpur, the CM attributed the incident to a communication gap.

He assured corrective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future, aiming for seamless transport operations across the state. Assam Rifles troopers had previously forced Manipur State Transport buses to turn back from the intra-district border, preventing them from reaching Churachandpur district.

Highlighting positive developments, Biren noted the gradual return of normalcy in Imphal Valley and a positive trend towards peace in hill districts like Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. Despite the crisis that emerged in May, the CM clarified that the state experienced five months of peace during the period, emphasising the importance of not generalising the situation as continuously violent.

The government remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering reconciliation, ensuring the welfare of all citizens, and promoting an environment of peace and harmony within Manipur.
