New Delhi: The Khelo India Scheme, under the leadership of Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, is revolutionizing India’s sports ecosystem by nurturing talent and enhancing infrastructure. With 2781 athletes identified across 21 sports, including para-athletics, the initiative provides Khelo India Athletes (KIAs) with coaching, equipment, medical care, and a monthly Out of Pocket Allowance (OPA).

The scheme’s impact is evident in international competitions. At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, 124 KIAs represented India, contributing 42 of the 106 medals, including nine golds. Similarly, 28 KIAs were part of India’s contingent at the Paris 2024 Olympics, showcasing their growing presence on the global stage. These athletes train at National Centres of Excellence (NCoEs) under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and other accredited academies, ensuring they are equipped to compete at the highest level.
Mandaviya praised the athletes, saying, “Our athletes have shown remarkable performance on international platforms, and we are proud of their achievements. The success of the Khelo India Scheme is reflected in their dedication and hard work.”

These sports are a part of our rich cultural heritage, and it is our responsibility to keep them alive.”
Infrastructure development is a cornerstone of the scheme, with 323 sports projects worth Rs. 3073.97 crore approved and 1041 Khelo India Centres established nationwide. These centers aim to enhance grassroots training, support retired athletes, and strengthen local sports ecosystems.
The comprehensive approach of the Khelo India Scheme is setting the stage for future champions while preserving India’s cultural legacy. Mandaviya concluded, “By nurturing grassroots talent and providing a robust support system, we are building a foundation for India’s sporting excellence on the global stage.” This visionary initiative continues to inspire a new generation of athletes while transforming the nation’s sports landscape.
