NEW DELHI: The BJP has secured a major victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, largely due to strong support from Purvanchali voters. With over 70% of Purvanchali-dominated seats going to the BJP, the partyโ€™s targeted outreach played a key role in breaking its 27-year-long wait for power.

Purvanchali voters, originally from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, make up about one-third of Delhiโ€™s electorate. Out of 70 Assembly seats, 51 have a significant Purvanchali population, with 27 constituencies where they form the majority. In 2025, the BJPโ€™s targeted outreach helped it gain a significant share of these votes, defeating AAP in key constituencies.

The BJPโ€™s campaign focused on promises like cleaning the Yamuna and ensuring grand Chhath celebrations, a major festival for the Purvanchali community. The party also pledged to develop the Yamuna riverfront like Ahmedabadโ€™s Sabarmati project and provide affordable housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

The strategy paid off, as all four BJP Purvanchali candidates emerged victorious:

  • In Sangam Vihar, where Purvanchali voters make up over 50% of the electorate, Chandan Choudhary defeated three-time AAP MLA Dinesh Mohaniya.
  • In Vikaspuri, Pankaj Kumar Singh unseated three-time AAP MLA Mahinder Yadav.
  • Similarly, in Dwarka, Parduyumn Rajput made a comeback, reclaiming his seat for the first time since 2013 by defeating AAPโ€™s Vinay Mishra.
  • In Karawal Nagar, Kapil Mishra, a former AAP MLA, secured victory once againโ€”this time on a BJP ticket.

Beyond these four key victories, BJP also secured major wins in other Purvanchali-dominated constituencies.

In Palam, Kuldeep Solanki defeated AAPโ€™s Joginder Solanki, while in Laxmi Nagar, Abhay Verma emerged victorious against AAPโ€™s B.B. Tyagi. In Matiala, Sandeep Sehrawat triumphed over AAPโ€™s Sumesh Shokeen.

Further expanding its grip, BJP reclaimed Rithala, where Kulwant Rana, a former BJP MLA from 2008 and 2013, defeated AAPโ€™s Mohinder Goel. In Mangolpuri, Raj Kumar Chauhan, a four-time Congress MLA who contested on a BJP ticket, secured victory against AAPโ€™s Rakesh Jatav. The party also swept Badli, with Ahir Deepak Chaudharyy defeating AAPโ€™s Ajesh Yadav.

The BJPโ€™s victory in these seats signals a major shift in voter loyalty, with Purvanchali voters aligning more with the party. This election marks a turning point in Delhi politics, strengthening the BJPโ€™s position in the capital and increasing the representation of Purvanchali leaders.
