LUCKNOW: With an aim to promote the handloom industry, the Yogi government has announced a slew of initiatives worth Rs 268 crore in the state budget for the financial year 2022-23.
In the Rs 6.15 lakh crore “largest-ever” state budget presented on Thursday, the government has earmarked Rs 250 crore to continue providing subsidised electricity to power looms.
The government will also provide solar inverters to handlooms as well as power looms to ensure uninterrupted power supply, it said on Friday.
UP financial minister Suresh Khanna, while presenting the budget, announced a new initiative, Jhalkari Bai Kori Handloom and Powerloom Special Component Scheme, which aims to help weavers from the scheduled castes to set up loom units. An amount of Rs 8 crore has been provided for this scheme.
“Under the new scheme, the government will look after the interests of handloom weavers from SC/ST communities,” the government said.
Handicrafts and handloom industry is one of the traditional industries in Uttar Pradesh. A labour-driven sector by its characteristic which provides employment opportunities to a significant number of people, the industry plays an important role in maintaining the socio-economic structure of the state, the UP government said.
The Yogi government said that its sixth budget addresses the interests of every section of society, with a special focus on job creation, skilling, and promoting a start-up ecosystem in the state.
During his 90-minute speech, Khanna announced that the unemployment rate in the state had fallen to 2.9 per cent in April 2022 from a whopping 18 per cent in June 2016.
The Yogi government aims to create more than 4 lakh jobs in the next five years, the finance minister announced, adding that it will set up 10,000 start-ups and 100 incubation centres.
Applauding Khanna for presenting an all-inclusive budget, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said it will serve as a vision for the all-around development of the state in the next five years and help the state achieve its goal of being a Rs 1 trillion economy.
He said 97 out of the total 130 resolutions taken in the BJP manifesto for the recently-concluded Assembly polls have been addressed in this budget.
